Sex crimes typically make for salacious headlines when it comes to news agencies. However, a reality of these cases is that after a scandalous headline is run to garner the attention of the public, we slowly learned that the reality of the case is not quite how it was presented. Here, we want to discuss a recent high profile poker player who has pleaded guilty after being accused of various sex crimes.
In December of 2019, longtime poker player Raymond Davis was arrested in faced nine counts of sex-related crimes involving minors. This arrest stemmed from a warrant issued in September of 2016, and it was finally executed after Davis was pulled over by a local police officer for a traffic violation.
The nine charges that Davis faced involved sex crimes against children. According to reporting at the time, “Metro Police say an underage girl claimed he paid her for oral sex at his home on several occasions after they met on Facebook. At one point, her friend said he paid them to take a shower while he watched.”
Now, we have learned that Davis agreed, on October 6, 2020, to plead guilty to felony coercion and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. These charges are significantly less serious than the nine previous sex crime charges Davis was facing. As part of this plea deal, Davis will get credit for time served and will not spend any more time in jail.
Throughout his ordeal, Davis has proclaimed his innocence. On a Facebook post made just days after he agreed to the plea deal, Davis still maintained that he was innocent and that the case has been biased against him from the beginning. Davis even says that he has pending litigation against various parties, including a judge, a sheriff, and two attorneys who previously represented him.
The point we want to get across in this post is that Davis was originally arrested on nine serious counts of sex crime charges in Las Vegas and labeled as a sexual predator by prosecutors and law enforcement. Now, despite all of the evidence they allegedly had against him, the best they could get was a plea deal on relatively minor charges. These cases are not always what they seem, and it is incredibly important to have an attorney by your side to help get to the truth of the matter, regardless of what the public thinks about the case.
